Whether you are winding your way up the A87 by car, catching a long-distance coach from Glasgow or Inverness, or arriving by sea on a CalMac ferry, the approach to Uig offers breathtaking views of the Minch and the jagged peaks of the Quiraing. Below, you’ll find everything you need to know to plan your route to this historic seaside gateway.

  • By Road

Uig is situated in the north east of the Isle of Skye about one hour’s drive from the Skye bridge.  The A87 is the main road through Skye and runs to the ferry terminal in Uig.  The presence of the ferry terminal ensures that the main road remains open in most weather conditions.

The A855 road around the north end of the Isle Of Skye leads from the village towards Kilmuir, Staffin, the Quirang and some of the most beautiful and most visited sites on the island.

Please be mindfull of the single track roads in the area and remember that we drive on the left! For more advice on how to drive safely in Scotland visit Driving in Scotland safely. For specific advice on single track roads here is a very useful video.

  • By Train

The nearest main line railway station is Kyle of Lochalsh, which is on the mainland side of the Skye bridge.  The railway line to and from Kyle of Lochalsh is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Scotland and connects to Inverness.  Train times are available on the Scotrail website and other UK rail service websites.

Rail and bus arrivals and departures at Kyle of Lochalsh do not always align.  If you’re planning to arrive by rail, there can be a long wait until the next bus service connection.
