Good to Know

Please enjoy your stay on The Isle of Skye.  Help us to look after our very special island by treating the environment and the people who live on Skye with respect.  Please visit www.skye.scot for useful information including locations of public car parks and toilets, EV charging points, recycling centres, chemical waste sites and more.

  • Driving on Skye
  • In the UK we drive on the left
  • Don’t park in the passing places
  • Check your rear view mirror frequently. If more than 4 cars are behind you, pull in at the first safe passing place and let those behind you pass
  • If the passing place is on your right, DO NOT pull across the road into it, wait on the road for the oncoming car to reach it, they will pull in and you will drive on.
  • A small wave is a nice ‘thank you’ to other drivers.
  • Always follow the speed limit through villages.
  • On a good straight road don’t speed up if you know someone behind you has been wanting to pass. This is their chance to overtake, so let them go.
  • Often the road is through grazing land so be extra careful when driving through these areas.

  • Toilets

Remember cafes and toilets may not be open so ‘go’ before you go.

Currently, the only public toilets in the area are in the Ferry Terminal Building.

  • Environment

Please take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints

  • ALL dogs must be kept under control and on a lead as there is open common grazing where animals are not fenced in. Do not approach the animals, especially new born lambs as this can make the mother reject them.
  • Dogs can frighten flocks of birds and other wildlife on the beach. If in doubt, keep your dog on a lead.
  • Dog waste must be picked up and taken with you to the nearest public bin (or take it home) There are public bins located by the viewpoint in Earlish, Rankin’s Supermarket at the entrance to Uig Woods, the Community Hall, opposite the Old Police Station and at the Ferry Terminal.
  • Often there are paths for walking, please keep to them to protect the delicate plants, ground-nesting birds and their eco system.
  • Please do not build stone stacks, but take plenty of photos and make lovely memories.
  • Use a stove for cooking, not an open fire.
  • Leave nothing behind. Take all litter to the public bins or home with you.
  • Read the Scottish Outdoor Access Code – the right to roam doesn’t mean you have access to all areas, so a quick read though this is very helpful! www.outdooraccess-scotland.scot
